Rug Hooking Realm

Tipi's Retreat presents

Carousel Horse

This page is presented as a boutique for Tiques to show off her many creative talents. As owner of the Osprey Nest, she has a great eye for design, elegance and style. Recently, she has taken a keen interest in rug hooking using hand dyed wool. She creates original patterns and only the best of materials. The background on this page was created from her very first project which I am very proud to say she gave to me as one of my treasured memories of our Minnesota weekend in December, 1996. It is about ten inches square with a loft of about a half-inch. It looks terrific on our dining room table under whatever centerpiece the season calls for.

tipiTap Tipi on the shoulder with your mouse and have her show you a larger version of this terrific rug-hooked art piece.

This is a photo of the Osprey Nest's interior and some of the antiques on display. The original picture was featured in Whitefish - The Magazine of Northwest Montana in 1991. The photo shoot was set up by Karen, aka: tiques so you can see how talented she is at decoration.

Osprey Nest

An excerpt from the magazine:

"Eleven miles south of Kalispell on Highway 93, The Osprey Nest is a rambling series of connected buildings, one a hay barn built in 1892. Owner, Karen Nagelhus bought the business in 1988. "That first winter," she recalls, "I went through twelve cords of wood. A handyman slept here to keep the two stoves going during a cold spell."

Karen loves to fix things and she has worked very hard to create a unique atmosphere here, commenting, "When I started, I wanted people to think I lived here." And it works -- you can tell she loves to decorate with her antiques. "The way things are juxtaposed keeps your interest," she continues. "You never know what you're going to find where." Specialties include early stoneware and Indian artifacts, fine china and 18th century furniture, wicker and musical instruments. Display cases glisten with exceptional silver and cut glass.

An enthusiastic businesswoman, Nagelhus is most proud of two accomplishments. She was the first place in the Valley to open seven days a week year-round. "I did it for locals, not just tourists," she comments. "At first things were slow, now even Sundays are outstanding!" Secondly, Karen created a valley-wide brochure for antique shops. "Antiques are a viable business entity here. The Flathead Valley should be the northwest capital for antiques, not Coeur d'Alene."
